This program celebrates the musical artistry of two of the VSO’s most beloved veterans, Concertmaster Vahn Armstrong and Principal Oboe Sherie Aguirre. Concluding the program is Shostakovich’s Symphony No. 5 which received an ovation that lasted well over half an hour at its premier in 1937. Described by Eric Jacobsen as “grand, robust, dark, and bright all at the same time,” it’s a thrilling piece of music that is as rousing as it is memorable.
