Join Hampton History Museum deputy director and curator Allen (Al) Hoilman to remember the life and accomplishments of “Chris Kraft: Hampton’s Unlikely Space Hero.”
A native Hamptonian born in Phoebus, preeminent NASA scientist Christopher Columbus Kraft began his career at Langley in 1945. In 1958, Kraft was assigned to the NACA Space Task Group, tasked with developing a system of manned space flight. He was a central figure in projects Mercury, Gemini, and Apollo, and led the development of NASA’s “Mission Control.” As Flight Director, he was responsible for all flight components for missions near Earth or in space. Following the presentation, Hoilman will lead a brief tour of the museum’s current Chris Kraft exhibit.
Allen Hoilman has been curator for the Hampton History Museum since 2016. From 1999 until 2016 he was curator for the Virginia Air & Space Center and NASA Langley Research Center Visitor Center.
